The Iliad II
Book VI, lines 128-142.... The Iliad, Part II ???
Dr. Smith says that Virgil is trying to top Homer... is he trying to top him by rewriting his own poem?
PS- Sibyl of Cumae is freakin' weird.

I'm not sure he's trying rewrite his poem. First off, it's only natural to want your piece to be the best of them all, so the idea of Virgil wanting to top Homer isn't all that unusual.
If his goal were really to rewrite the Iliad, Virgil would probably try to recreate some of the battles instead of mentioning them in passing as he does.

I feel like Virgil isn't trying to "top" Homer, just extend his story. Also, I agree with Jay, it is only normal to want your piece to be the best.
